b78481So, after all your hard work and determination, you have finally landed that great new job and your first day is right around the corner. Keep in mind that first impressions are important – make a bad one and could take time to gain the trust and respect of your new co- workers and managers. Here a few tips for making the best possible impact on your first day at your new job:

Bring a notepad, and use it – Your day will be spent meeting new people and learning new things. Jotting notes down will not only help you remember things in the days and weeks to come but, also help convey the message to your new colleagues that you are serious about doing the best job possible.

Listen more, talk less – Your first few days should be spent listening far more than talking. By all means respond to all inquiries and make comments where necessary. Your first week however, is not the time to spend hours telling everybody about your cute dog or your new boyfriend when you should be focused on learning about your new responsibilities.

Avoid the phrase: “Well, that’s not the way we did it at my old job”. This is no your old job; do it their way. When you have become a trusted team member in your position you may voice your ideas and suggestions. This certainly should not been done during the first few days unless ideas are asked of you.

Be ready for anything – You may be welcomed into the new organization and many people may be willing to help you fit in and understand your work. Or you may be shown to an isolated cubicle without much of an onboarding process. Every company has their own way of orientating new employees and some do a better job of it than others.  But never be afraid to ask for help and guidance if you need it, rather than muddle through alone and make mistakes.
