Asking for a Raise in a Recession?

6529-000193aIf you feel you deserve a raise but, none has been forthcoming how do you ask for one, especially in the current economic climate?

First,  you need to try to discern if the company you work for is a position to offer one.  If there have been layoffs recently it is probably not the right time to ask for a raise. However, if you can prove to your boss that you make a vital contribution the company cannot afford to be without you may have a chance. Even in a recession most companies do not want to lose valuable and seasoned employees.

Before you ask for a raise, do a little research into the average salary is for your job in your area. If your current pay exceeds that, you may not be in a position to ask for money (especially when others are willing to work for less).

If you do decide to go ahead and take the plunge request a formal meeting with your boss in advance rather than bringing up the matter at the coffee station.

When you do have your meeting make sure you have solid facts and figures to back up your worth.  Simply stating that you need more money each week because your rent/electric/dog food bill has gone up will not get you very far.

If the answer is no, do not despair, or make rash threats to quit. You may still be able to negotiate non financial perks such as an extra day of vacation a year or added flexibility in your daily schedule. If the company you work for is not in a position to offer more cash right now they may still be open to this kind of reward for hard work and diligence.
