Job Fair Tips

2006JobFairJob fairs differ a great deal from one another, as does people’s opinion of them. To some they are a pointless waste of time, while others have had great success and have even been hired on the spot. Whatever your general thoughts on them, in a time when unemployment is still rising, any chance to get out and showcase your skills really might be worth your time. As long as you do a little preparation beforehand.

Before the career fair, check and see if there is an official website for the event (more often than not there is) Make a list of the companies who will be represented at the fair and spend some time researching those that interest you. Check for “maps” of the fair once you arrive to locate each employer’s booth.

Although you may only have a few minutes to speak with each company representative treat each experience with the seriousness you would a “real” job interview. Have your skills in mind so that you can quickly “sell” yourself. There are many other job seekers and employers are short on time to talk to people. Inquire if you may follow and ask for business cards. Make sure to send thank  you letters/emails to those you have spoken to.

Don’t head out in sweats, dress as well as you would for any interview, and treat the occasion as an opportunity, not just a break from your online job search.

Of course, it is essential that you have a sufficient supply of resumes on you. Some job seekers also go to the lengths of having business cards printed up that contain a sort of micro resume, listing the key skills and experiences they have to offer, as these are easy for recruiters to slip into their pocket.

If nothing else, a job fair is a great way to get out and network with other professionals, and of course size up the competition.
